Leonberger dog is a large mountain dog. Race name comes from the mountain town of Leonberg in southwestern Germany. According to legend the early 1800s a certain Heinrich Essig has proposed to create a dog breed to resemble the town as imperial emblem depicting a lion. To do this he's paired Newfoundland, St.. Bernard Shepherd's and thus obtaining the Pyrenees mountain dog (Lion = Leo, berg = mountain) which has retained characteristics today.
